DNA methylation plays a dual role in cancer: it is both a stable biomarker and a functional driver of tumor progression. I view cancer methylomes as a reprogrammed state, often showing global hypomethylation (genomic instability) together with local hypermethylation (tumor suppressor silencing). These changes may promote tumor heterogeneity and adaptive evolution under therapy pressure. In the future, epigenome editing could enable more precise regulation of key loci, offering a promising direction for targeted and combinational cancer therapies.
